CHAPTER TWENTY
Morning came too soon, and the heavy knock on the door was far too loud after the long and painful night. I looked for Amil, but he had gone and the chair had been put back.
Althea was still sleeping soundly next to me, holding on to my arm.
The knocking sounded a third time before Talos entered the room. He looked ready for a fight, his eyes dark and brooding. âI heard you had an interesting chat with Prince Vassilis last night?â
His eyes traveled over Althea before he slipped his hands into his pockets and watched me for my answer.
I didnât bother to explain or sit up. My head wouldnât allow it.
Heâd warned me against the meeting with the Prince and I hadnât listened. But I had needed the information the Prince had divulged. Briefly, I wondered if Prince Vassilis was also waking to a thundering headache and if an investigation had been ordered to find who had tried to poison him and, additionally, me.
My stomach growled and roiled at the slightest movement.
Talos took a step closer but then hesitated. âCan I get you anything?â
I wasnât sure what could calm the storm in my gut or the chaos ringing through my ears, but I managed to say, âWater and aspirin.â
Talos went to the side table and popped open a bottle of pills I hadnât seen before. He shimmied out two small white tablets and offered them to me. I placed them on my tongue and took the glass of water from his other hand. Swallowing irritated a bulge in my throat, likely from vomiting while unconscious.
Next to me, Althea stirred awake, catching sight of Talos beneath misty morning eyes. She sat up and looked to me, sadness and remorse on her face as she scanned over the bandage wrapped around my head.
âShe will be in excellent hands, Lady Althea,â Talos assured her with a permissive tone. âThe King and Queen will be waiting for you in the sunroom for breakfast.â
âIsa, I donât need to go,â she spoke to me in a hushed tone.
I mustered a smile and glanced to Talos before answering, âIâll be okay. Letâs have lunch on the terrace later. Okay?â
She nodded but was still apprehensive as she slid off the bed and padded out of the room.
Talos turned and watched her leave, pride and sadness weighing on his shoulders. When he turned back, however, his guilt and aggravation were back and clouding his pupils.
âI hope whatever you and the Prince discussed was worth the concussion and stitches to your scalp.â He raised his chin pointedly to the top of my head.
âHe had plenty to talk about before the sour tea silenced him. Have you found who tried to poison us?â
âPerhaps. Weâve rounded up all the chateau staff for questioning. Weâll have the being whoâs responsible by the end of the day.â
âWhy would you lie to me? You knew what Lawrence said about there being Fata-Incubo halflings was true.â
His shoulders slumped, and his head hung heavy. âWhat you have to understand, Isa, is that his existence and the public debate would put all Incubo at risk.
